Actually, it was the independents, who went to the democrats by 85-15 percent, that made the difference. They showed up and they voted for the democrats, or more proabably...against the republicans...or "for change". Take your pick.

Republican turn-out was about the same as in '04... (so the turn-out efforts were a success).

As Pomp correctly noted: the difference was in the middle, with the Independents (second largest political 'grouping' in America, self-reported).

They were fired-up, and they turned out.

(Dem and Rep turn-outs were both pretty normal).
