San Francisco could be bashed about tolerance from two directions. Some people may think it is tolerant of things it shouldn't be, or perhaps that it embraces and endorses things it should merely be tolerant of. Others might feel it is intolerant of many things (like conservatism, or libertarian ideas involving jobs, commerce and money). I think many of the critics you where talking about meant the 1st thing. I'm focusing more in on the 2nd.

I said I thought it was more tolerant than the norm overall, and I think I still stand by that statement, but the statement isn't a very strong one, "more tolerant than the norm", doesn't mean "extremely tolerant".

As for attacking "San Francisco Values" - Well certainly some ideas get a lot more supported in San Francisco than they do in the rest of the country. To an extent there is a disconnect between a typical American and a typical resident of San Francisco, that disconnect becomes something politicians can use to say "this person doesn't have the same ideas about values that you do", to their constituents. The message really isn't all that different than the attacks a conservative candidate trying to run in San Francisco (or another liberal area) would face. The words would be different, but the idea would be "he doesn't share your values", whatever those values are, or are perceived as being.

"...Certainly not reason for derision by the right in their attempt to slanderize the region with their 'San Francisco Values', which they spit out with the same contempt as they do 'liberal' and 'activist judges'."

Sure it is!
