Few Americans seem to remember (or were not taught) about the early history of Islam and its role not only in religious tolerance but as a haven for those persecuted by Christians.

Islam's early expansion was often violent, and radical fundamentalist adherents to the religion are causing problems now, but there was a time when the areas under Islamic rule where among the most developed and sophisticated and tolerant in the world. Then the Mongols attacked, then there was a move towards inflexible fundamentalism and away from tolerance and non-religious learning, while Europe had the renaissance and then the enlightenment, and then the industrial revolution, and became dominant across the world.
