I have no idea how high the market will go but think I will be able to recognize signs ot a top when they start to occur.

You are a very smart trader.. Even if January isn't good timing you'll know and get out quick. If it plays out like 1987 you sure don't want to be on the short side through March. Perhaps the 'event' trigger occurs as 20 years ago in summer/fall 2007?
