I'm probably somewhere between the two, probably leaning more to conservatism.

I'm probably somewhere between the two as well, although perhaps slightly more libertarian at this point, at least I have been trending more in that direction. My first coherent ideological position developed during the Reagan administration, and was pretty compatible with Reagan's policies, except the deficits (he's still my favorite modern president), since then I have become more libertarian.

Butting in here, Brumar;

I think you're quite correct about libertarians constituting a small percentage of the population, unfortunately in my view.

Hayek and a dose of Charles Murray on the spontaneous development of extended orders made me a believer in liberty. Without coercion, divergent groups will tend to interact commercially to their self-interest. Dopers and boozers and church-goers and assorted others may shake their fists at each other, but they'll self-segregate adequately to get along to the maximum extent possible.

A policy of MYOFB maximizes a civil and prosperous society in my experience.

Expanding on my earlier reply:

The "market" in personal behavior works parallel to the market in economics. Information is assimilated and acted upon -- spontaneously -- absent external coercive influence.

Could we return to a more MYOFB society some of what might happen include lessons, some very old:

Practitioners of the old virtues would rediscover, over time, that their habits result in a better life for their progeny.

Asshole bandits might discover that the costs of their behavior generally exceed the benefits.

Examples could reach infinity.
