That doesn't surprise me. For me, the irony of cruising is that the time on ship is often better than the time in port. Going ashore sometimes gives the opportunity to see which places we'd like to return for a more extended stay, but not much else.

Never have the wife and I felt so abused by a timetable driven by weather and the hurry up and wait syndrome of the 500 passenger boat we were on.

Not much relaxation there. Were you on one of the major cruise lines? Which one?
