I use aerial photos routinely in my environmental assessment work -- in fact, I couldn't get along without them. But I typically access the closest available university collection rather than buy the things.

When I go off the beaten track (canoeing, hiking, whatever) and need a paper topo map (laptops suck inside canoes), I fold it to the desired location and then press it inside a jumbo Ziplock bag -- keeps the moisture out splendidly, even if you drop it in the drink
