Every time this subject comes up it shocks me how cavalier everyone is about letting the state dictate how a citizen is going to live two years of his life. Reveals a lot about someone’s core beliefs. They just shrug their shoulders and say hey, it’s good for 'em. Now let’s get back to bitching about my taxes.

I've said it before: I'm not supporting a draft unless everyone -- and I mean EVERYONE -- spends time serving near battlezones. I don't mean right at the front with a gun, where the old farts like me would be a liability, not an asset; but somewhere nearby.

This goes especially for politicians. They can serve one month a year near the front. They can change bandages and empty bedpans. Or they can wash dishes or peel potatoes or push paper or do laundry or whatever the hell else they might be good for. But they need to be close enough to see, hear, and smell the immediate consequences of their decisions.

No deferments, no exceptions, no "I had other priorities."

Hey, let's enslave everybody for two years. Serves em right!

You are thinking inside an old box.
I'm not hung up on the time frame...not even sure it is important.
6 months is sufficient for me. That will give them a stake in the system and way of life...but offer them incentives to stay longer. Perhaps that is where funded college comes in.
Many draftees under our old system ended up enlisting for longer periods so they could select their military occupation specialty training, branch and/or unit of assignment.

Remember the only Democratic country that has not been a significant participant in a war for the last coupla hundred years is also the only one with mandatory military training.

That country is Switzerland. Their soldiers even take their rifles home after completing training.
