You have not grasped what Rangel is proposing. He would have the vast majority of kids handing out government cheese, not learning how to take apart a rifle.

I like his idea

Remember the only Democratic country that has not been a significant participant in a war for the last coupla hundred years is also the only one with mandatory military training.

??don't most European countries have compulsory service? And certainly Israel is a democracy with extremely mandatory military training.

Lt Bryan Suits, KVI Radio in Seattle, served in Iraq for a couple of years. He suggested that the US reinstitute the old GI Bill....not the Montgomery GI Bill.... Do you know the difference between the two?

Evidently, the Old GI Bill gave each volunteer to understand that for 4 years of Active service, they would be able to go to college, with tuition paid to any college in the country where they could be accepted.

Would this work, IYO?

Currently the military rejects some fraction of the folks who volunteer their service. Thinking out of the box, why not have congress order the military to accept everyone who walks through the door? That will get us at least one step closer to universal service.
