I think we should raise compensation levels to gain the recruitment levels needed. If this cannot work then the draft should be initiated, but I suspect this wont happen until after a very huge event that is recognized by most as a threat to our survival.

Compensating with more college directed compensation would be part of the compensation.

18-24 months training and protecting oil fields in the Persian Gulf then four years of college paid. Fund it off of a gasoline tax.

I have no doubt we will have millions of boots on the ground in the gulf sometime over the next 10 years.

Evidently, the Old GI Bill gave each volunteer to understand that for 4 years of Active service, they would be able to go to college, with tuition paid to any college in the country where they could be accepted.

Would this work, IYO?


I suppose it depends on how old old is. The GI Bill began in the 40s. Then you needed to serve for two years to be eligible. But these programs are tweaked by congress every year and I have not kept up with the details.I recall the version of The Montgomery Bill I was briefed on pays much more and has fewer limitations.

I went to college using the 1970s version of the GI Bill and the Bootstrap program. Bootstrap allowed one to remain on (paid) active duty and attend college for up to two years to complete a bachelor or graduate degree, the GI Bill provided the funding for tuition and books. Prior to bootstrap I used the GI Bill to attend night school college courses while on active duty.

I must add this. I have never heard an enlisted soldier complain about either program. I did hear one officer on SI complain about contributing and said it was unfair as the old GI Bill did not require that. The contribution is minimal.
I told him times have changed. When I was a PFC I earned $99 per month. Today's PFC is paid $1,700 monthly.
This program is but one tool used for recruiting. And it is effective.
