re: You know this, how?

Not supposed to ask Tim that. He can make any radical, unsupported claim he wants.

I didn't say changing crops was easy or cheap, but changing the whole economy of the world to emit a lot less CO2 is massively difficult and expensive.

As for dramatic short term effects. I didn't say they where impossible.

"Its much cheaper and easier to make a new variant of a tomato, or other crops, or even to shift some production to new areas, then it is to greatly reduce CO2 emissions."

He has no idea how hard it is to make "a new variant of a tomato". As much as tomatoes are one step up from poisonous weeds, they can prove to be very difficult to grow successfully. Its believed they originated in the highlands of S. America. That meant cool nites and very hot, clear days. Consequently, most tomatoes don't set fruit when temps are above 70º at nite and below 85º during the day. It took many years for them to come up with "a new variant" that can be grown in coastal PNW where daytime temps rarely reach 85º. And frankly, those tomatoes are a facsimile of the real thing.

Tim has no understanding of the intricacies and complexities of our ecological system. He can't even begin to fathom the disastrous impact global warming could have on that system. "What's a little global warming.......we'll grow tomatoes in S. Canada". Like many Republicans, they think Man is not unlike a god because he walked on the moon and because Man starts with a capital 'M'.
