I think they have stepped off the precipice.

Sadly, I agree. The US military won't be out in the streets stopping them so it will be open season unless some sort of overarching deal is reached very quickly.

I wouldn't bet on it myself.

Allen I feel the same way. It's difficult to imagine the hate that perpetuates these atrocities. Did you see the 68 year old woman who became a suicide bomber...

INCOMPREHENSIBLE. We sit here at our computers while all this horrendous carnage is going on and can only internalize.

The depth of the tragedy gripping the entire region is almost beyond comprehension. It is possible that what we are seeing is only the beginning of something much worse. While we are not the ones encouraging this carnage, we have been central to setting the stage and in that sense this is a tragedy we helped to produce even if we are not able to direct it. The US needs far more than a tactical shift in the middle east -- we need a rethinking of what we are doing there and what policy options we have that can help recast our role there. When a grandmother blows herself up it would be wrong to think that her blood and the blood of those against whom she seeks revenge is not in part on our hands -- it is.
