I still remember my old home phone number from two states ago, and the one between too. Now if I could just remember where I put my glasses.

When I was about 5 years old, we lived in a very rural area. Our phone number was Hazeltine 246-J. We spoke to a live operator who always knew we were the Adams household. My mom would let me use the phone very seldom to call an aunt across town.

My grandparents lived in a small mountain town. To get the operator you would pick up the listening end of the big box phone on the wall, turn the crank about 3 times and the operator would respond. They would simply tell her to ring the Jones home, or the hardware store. No numbers involved there.
