CJ, I'd rather see a discussion of real solutions to problems. It is my belief that the overpoliticizing of this war has led to conditions that led to Abu Ghraib and other abuses, because a demand for results substitutes for an actual discussion of real solutions, which of course is pushed aside with the politicization.

Bush and Rumsfeld are ultimately responsible for all this, but I'm pointing out that the Dems are also part of the problem and not part of the solution. Well, except the solution of replacing the incompetent commanders in charge, which isn't saying much because that's the default result of any failed leader.

It was policy, approved by Rumsfeld and carried out by private contractors with some bleed over to troops who were led to believe they were in the chain of command.

Exactly. When the president of the USA and his closest folks are arguing in the highest courts of the nation, with bypartisan opposition by the way, that the Geneva convention is a "quaint" notion, what can you expect from subordinates at all levels. Consider that the administration has changes the rules of interrogation lawfully in response to reticence from CIA operatives to follow their direction. Can you imagine what these folks are being asked to do behind the scenes to motivate a refusal to carry orders?

Now true, there were some troops who went off the rails on their own, the rape and murder of that 15 year old and her family comes to mind.

This is a very different issue...the soldier who pled guilty explained well by saying that you go out on the streets of Iraq and learn to hate the locals to soothe your fear.
