It is simple. To do that would mean he screwed up. That would be embarrassing. Much better to hang in there and hope that Armageddon comes soon. So what if it gets people killed senselessly? That isn't nearly as bad as taking responsibility for a screw up.

Denial, idiocy or insanity

He's trying to prevent historians from calling his presidency a total failure. What he doesn't understand is that the longer he persists with his Iraq nonsense the worst he will look in the future. It takes a strong man to admit when he's wrong; a weak one who can not.
