You are probably right about the dike. I do think that if saddam had died, the thing might have blown up at that time but we did break it and what we have to do is to get away from the colin powell if you break it, you gotta fix it theory because that just will compound the problem. Only way to win in iraq is to do to the sunni insurgents and shiaa militias what we did to japan at the end of WW2. Get them to their knees and follow our beneficient guidance toward democracy. I am not proposing that solution at all. Last time it took firebombing and nukes to offset suicide kamikaze pilots and cave dwelling soldiers fighting to the last man. To do that now we would have to draft Charlie Rangel and whats left of the WW2 gen. Mike
PS you wont get me talking about nation building much anymore. Back to realism has its downside like ignoring Darfur.. Its the balance between realism and idealism that counts and that is more based on good judgement by pols and military. If you loook at our wins and losses and ties since WW2, i figure we lost the two big ones and somalia and lebanon, tied in korea and won in granada and serbia. Shit, that aint such a good record whether you are on the left or right. New danger for us now is ISOLATIONISM, PROTECTIONISM and ANTI-IMMIGRANT HYSTERIA now that we took care of Bush/Wilsonianism.
