We could have had an operating surplus...sure. We could have had current receipts over current expenses of $50, for example. But existing debt (not created during the year in question) required debt service of $60.....

So I could certainly have an operating profit for the year and still see an increase in the debt on the family books. Operating statement vs. Balance Sheet.
