This version of 4x4 is trash. AMD should be utterly embarrassed to release a high-end desktop system which consumes 400W at idle in this day and age. First they should have waited for a suitable AMD/ATI chipset which would have shaved 50+W off the power consumption. Second, they should have waited for a ~89W 65-nm replacement. If they can't produce 65W K8s at 3GHz then they shouldn't be producing K8 4x4 at all.

If the K8L only achieves IPC parity with Core2, it's not going to be enough, because Intel will be clocking a good 25% higher with 45nm Penryn.

And then Nehalem will arrive, and wipe the floor with it.

Yep, very bad news if true. It means Kentsfield is only one speed grade away from matching the fastest quad-core K8L (~2.7-2.9GHz) at launch. Penryn would outperform K8L and do it with lower power consumption.

Good point, since AMD will not have a follow up core after K8L. AMD's design teams scattered around the country have been practicing archery instead of designing CPUs.
