I don't think the US is worried about Iran's ability to nuke the USA within a few years - we are worried about Iran's ability to give a nuke to some shady group that would use it to wipe Israel off the map.

Thanks Mani.

I knew the youth were stirring things up a bit back then, it seemed to die down after their elections.

"Now I am going to say something that I am sure very few will agree with me. I don’t think Iran’s nuclear program is in any way a threat to US. For one thing they are decades away, if not for ever away, from having a capability to deliver a nuclear explosion to US shores. Developing a nuclear weapon that can be mounted on a missile or placed in a suitcase is not a trivial task. And of course developing ICBM is another story. And even if by some miracle they did that by lets say 2050, they are not stupid enough to use it, or provide it to a terrorist organization, were retaliation by US that will kill them all is almost a certainty."

I've used this argument several times. The retort is that the mullahs don't care, they will get their virgins in Heaven. My observation is that the mullahs prize their skin and their time on Earth. I have never heard of a mullah strapping on a suicide vest....

I detest the current nuclear development and wish Iran would have a true democracy that did not oppress its people and isolate itself from the modern world by perusing what ever it is they are pursuing. But I can’t understand all the commotion about their capability to enrich low grade uranium.

I guess my question is a fairly simple one but not one that can be answered easily. But given Iran's basically capitalistic economy and the growing educational levels of its population, how can some form of democracy not be far behind? I continue to believe that Iran has the capacity to become one of the most significant nations in the ME both politically and economically in spite of its Shia population which is seen by the Sunni majority as a negative. In the next 25 years, I think their political and economic influence could eclipse Saudi Arabia esp. if they 'discover' democracy. I would not be surprised if they join BRIC further down the road from here.

As for the nuke thing, I think its much to do about nothing.

So then, what do you think are the odds of Iran becoming a democracy any time soon?

Sweet!

TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian students staged a rare demonstration against President Mahmamoud Ahmadinejad on Monday, lighting a firecracker and burning his photograph in the audience as he delivered a speech at their university, the state news agency said.
