I think uniting with iran/shiaa radicals against al quaeda/wababis/salafists/corrupt saudis etc. is a similar type of situation.

One thing you and I can agree. This is complex mess that George W. Bush got us into. There is no easy way out. In my opinion, what you are suggesting could get us into a much messier situation.

Pakistan is already a nuclear power. There is no way to assess what would happen if Pakistan falls apart. I don't know what the consequences would be to make enemies out of existing mostly friendly Sunni states.

In my opinion, our basic policy should be, "first, do no harm".

We will not be able to resolve this situation by going alone. We need a real coalition. We need leadership that is really good at triangulating. It is not easy, but I think it can be done.
