Maybe AMD wants to overcome their weakness with the acquisition of ATI. Even then, they're still talking in terms of a monolithic PC platform, where they integrate everything but the kitchen heat sink. The dynamics of the game console market are much different and still do not favor AMD, or even AMD/ATI.

No?

A) AMD is already an incumbent.
B) AMD creates high-value microprocessors.
C) AMD creates high-value GPUs.
D) AMD creates high-value chipsets.
E) AMD has begun a program to integrate these components ever more tightly, further increasing value.
F) AMD has opened up their platform to new and novel acceleration technology.

(By "value", I mean performance/$ for a wide range of performance.)

What are the "dynamics of the game console market" that make these factors (especially E) no more attractive than alternatives, and what exactly are the alternatives?
