December 1, 2006: The U.S. Army has been able to achieve an extraordinary feat, by sustaining it's strength in a long war (longer than World War II) using only volunteers. The main reason for this success was the willingness of troops already in uniform to stay there. Reenlistments have been higher than before the war on terror began in 2001. The invasion of Iraq resulted in even higher reenlistment rates.

We are paying for it.
Today's PFC earns over $20,000 in base pay - plus food, clothing and shelter.
Enlistment bonuses are as high as $40,000.
The GI Bill is worth about $80,000.
That is a helluva package for a high school grad.

To keep him in, reenlistment bonuses are as high as $150,000.
The $ is talking.
Regular Army reenlistment rates are about 50%.
SF about 75%.

I think that is an EXCELLENT idea for TWO REASONS. First it helps the Army but SECOND it helps THE RECRUIT. It takes a possible failure into a rehabilitated citizen with opportunities not only in the service but afterwards in society. A WIN WIN. jdn
