Interestingly, since education is related to giving, I think it might be true that those without jobs are also the most ignorant- so that's another factor, and a factor which also might explain why they don't have a job.

Aside from layoffs and medical disabilities which could be completely unrelated to education.

Though there is a good correlation between education and income. But it's safe to say that most likely the working poor are poorly educated, but still give a higher percentage of their income.

Another interesting tidbit buried in the Brooks study is happiness related to giving. I don't necessarily conclude that people who give are happy, but think it's more likely that happy people are more likely to give.

Which then brings us back to the poor. Are poor people happier? They give more. The studies say there's a correlation between happy and generosity. I've noticed in some of the footage from dirt poor countries that the people appear to be happy. And there are some happiness studies [There's a study for everything.] that show that some of the happiest people on the planet live in dirt poor countries.

Let's not jump to the poverty causes happiness conclusion. The analysis of those countries suggests that poor people have a stronger association with family/community/tribe and that's the underlying reason for the happiness. As people get richer, they tend to distance themselves from the community and families.
