That is one very "happy" looking pope and the idea of such cocktails for the dying is absolutely fundamentally sound . Who would send their children to a dentist for drilling without novacaine or surgery without anesthesia in any culture now ?

But even more for perhaps one last chance a dying person/entity to have that one last total sensation to feel the elan vital that was themselves once again and leave this existence with at least some dignity with that chemical aid . Not to mention the allieviated suffering just for the attending medical staff and close relatives to have to endure such prolonged suffering as well . Which is such a grievieous thing for the living to have to see compounded so many times over .

People are always so relieved to hear that someone "died in their sleep" ...perhaps for in sleep they were at least free and living hopefully in some painless dreamstate of the minds creation .

Of course there have been cultural necessities in certain tribal historical pasts where the ritual of inflicting pain & the endurance of pain were commonly used techniques . And with the goal to create a "fit" member of that society's ranks and uncommon warrior class that would fight fiercely to the death & die willingly for the honor of clan , tribe, city & king ...and their Gods .

Who can ever forget the Spartans or Vikings or the assassins of the Rif mountains . The Bedouin warriors that took Mecca & later became the Islamic sweep across the entire north of africa into spain and beyond to the east , spreading such good cheer & equality . They were once worshipers of the Goddesses too and now they had a "manly God" who ordered the enforcement of a "new utopian way" .
That there is always the promise for the true warrior of an eternal afterlife of endless feasting , the peace of an elysian fields , or a heaven with 72 virgins and rivers that run with wine sure appeals to the hedonism in us and religion provides the "formulae" for prescribed living to achieve that end . To be in that place where one can be "drunk" forever but without the hangover lost in the love of God's etherial embrace.

One would think that Mohammed or Jesus or any such "prophet" at least had a shared "original experience" of some ephiphany & glorious vision that started them off with those musings about God out in some desert place alone . And in fact, all the stories are not too disimilar in that regard where that individual taps into some self induced chemical state of euphoric experience that is likened to angels appearing or God flashing his bright light before them out into the setting or rising sun , and all became so clear . Or to the sages of the east so many did practice such incredible ritualistic self denial & austerities to attempt to produce some sensation of obliteration of ego and union with "God" .

* That Shakespear did use the leaf too always suspected , especially in Midsummer Nights Dream's "dreamscape" with that little imp Puck flitting about the forest flinging love's fairy dust in everyone's eyes ...and the happy chaos that winds up with some deeply in love with whatever they first see , even an ass ! ;-)
