Kerry-McCain could have united the country in badly needed ways. Kerry was even willing to let McCain be Secretary of Defense as well as VP. A huge offer.

McCain knew Bush-Cheney were dishonest, corrupt and bad for the country but he backed them anyway. So yes he put party above all else, including his own self interests, because if he'd been Kerry's running mate he'd be in line to be president in 2012, and until then he'd be the most influential VP ever. Now McCain must run again on his own, and he may never be president.
