If memory is correct, in 1999 both Republicans and Democrats were falling over themselves trying to give Colin Powell their 2000 presidential nominations. It's fair to say that with such broad-based support he stood an excellent chance of winning.

And that it's very iffy if American is ready for a black president yet. Closer than before, but still very risky.
