Nikon to supply Powerchip with latest chip steppers

TOKYO, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Nikon Corp. , the world's No. 2 chip stepper maker, said on Thursday it has won a contract to supply Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. with equipment used to make NAND flash memory chips.

Powerchip will install Nikon's latest immersion steppers, complex machines used to print circuitry on silicon wafers, in its factory in Hsinchu, Taiwan, Nikon said.

The equipment will be used to make 50-nanometre NAND microchips typically used in digital consumer electronics.

Nikon competes against Netherlands-based ASML , the top stepper maker, in winning orders from chip makers.

The so-called immersion machines use water between the lens and the silicon wafer and can project finer details on a chip, which means more chips can be cut from a single wafer.
