Why would AMD want to update fab30 to 65nm when 45nm will follow so soon?

Because 45nm won't follow "so soon", of course.

Re: I suppose that you've considered that AMD will have to put the 45nm equipment somewhere? Just a wild guess, but fab38 seems somehow logical. Why would AMD want to update fab30 to 65nm when 45nm will follow so soon?

They can do both, as with FAB36. Start with 65-nm, expand to 45-nm.

Perhaps there's more than meets the eye. Maybe producing on 90nm might be the most cost effective thing to do for older products that aren't going to be transitioned? Maybe there might be some chipset manufacturing going on in fab30?

I don't doubt there are sound economic reasons to do it. Both 90-nm and 65-nm K8s certainly won't appreciate in value as Intel expands Core across all market segments next year. AMD is expecting to be cash poor in 2007. I'd be cautious about overcapacity too. Brown bananas are better than no bananas if you are starving.
