We'll even lose our place as the consumers for the products of the world at some point, as the middle classes in formerly under-developed countries form and consume. China and India will be developing populations of consumers that will dwarf ours.

I completely disagree.

I prefer the idea that a rising ship can lift all boats. It's not a zero sum game... the lives of the people of the world HAVE become better, as a whole, over time. And that can continue. We have the resources to evolve our political and social systems towards better living condition for everyone. That, in essence, has been the history of mankind.
