That was under Reagan. There were some who floated the idea that the proper way to view the national debt was as a percentage of GNP. By running a higher deficit, that would stimulate the economy and cause a rise in tax receipts. If the stimulated economy grows fast enough, then the deficit can actually reduce the debt over time. Even if it doesn't, you can still point to the GNP and say that our ratio might be high, but other countries have a higher one. If this sounds like you kid trying to justify bad behavior, well...

where did you come up with your deficit numbers?

I have 248B for 2006, 318B for 2005, and 413B for 2004.
