I think the problem is separating "common" cultural roots, from nostalgia for a time when we didn't have to care about what was "common". Many people, unfortunately, feel nostalgia for the latter, and don't really care about the former, which (imo) is part of what tears society apart.

Maybe it's just a function of age, but the magic of the Christmas tradition evaporated for me a long time ago, swamped by the waves of commercialism. When I see people stampeding one another at 6AM the day after Thanksgiving to kick off the "holiday season" by buying all the stuff they can get their hands on, count me out.

Just another overhyped marketing exercise, IMHO.

When it comes to the music that is typically Christmas or should I say traditionally Christmas I agree with you.
Messiah always is my very favorite and this TIME of year is not complete without hearing it. Preferably with a large chorus and organ.

I don't totally comprehend why music has to enter into this entire con-flab on the religious reasons but I guess there always has to be something to war on about...

To me this time of year is for peace, love and brotherhood of man. We have very little of any of this in evidence now.
