Work well would mean that it works well for the player as well as the owner. Would you like every profit or compensation that you get to be the lowest amount that you would possibly accept? Whether I would like it or not is not the question, it is whether or not it is a good system for the society. We're not lowering athlete's salaries to the bare minimum possible - $200k is plenty for playing baseball. And I've been in situations where I've felt overpaid for my job, but nothing like the 10x overpaid that athletes are often in.
