Elmat, Most of our Jews came from Russia or other parts of Eastern Europe. This country at the time of the Civil War had very few Jews but after the 1881 assassination of Czar Alexander II vast numbers of Jews began to leave Russia, altogether several million came here, most of them passing through Austria and Germany on the way. Of course they nearly all landed at New York. In 1881 Russia had by far the worlds largest Jewish population. Now the USA has the largest number of Jews, not Israel. Slagle
