I thought this was an interesting review of the Samsung SYNCH (HSDPA). Cingular has been pushing both this and the Blackjack very hard.

Best of all (at least to me), battery life is becoming acceptable on Samsung's WCDMA handsets.

My thoughts on SYNC from long time nokia user

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been using nokia's for the best 5 years. I went from a 6200 to 6230 to 6620 to a 6682. Always loved the great reception, UI, and speaker quality.

I decided to take a dive and try out a samsung SYNC since it was -$50 for me. Hey can't beat gettin paid to use a phone. I heard all good reviews and it looked pretty nice. Had it now for 2 days, it's not long i know. But i have a good idea of what a good and bad handset are from previous uses of all phones. I've had moto's, SE's, LG's, Nokia's, and even a Pantech. but Here are some initial thoughts:

Screen - awesome. qvga. nuff said. anybody going from a non-qvga screen to one with qvga screen will be amazed. it's basically like the difference from going from SDTV to HDTV. great text clarity, pictures look awesome and its colorful 5/5

Camera - 2MP. it's definately not a bad camera. i would go so far as to say that there isn't really a noticeable difference between it and a w810i. It's much clearer than the previous 1.3 mp camera I had and even without a macro mode, produces pictures worth transferring over to your PC to view or email. 4/5

UI - Long time symbian s60 user so althought the Samsung UI isn't as good as the s60 i'm used it, it's not a bad UI. Much better than Motorola, LG, and I prefer it over SE. Reason? It has send/end buttons unlike SE. Also, It has the sub menu categories when you highlight a selection similar to the s60 UI so that you can see what your options are before you go into a sub-menu. Customizable to almost every button and easy to navigate. 4/5

Speakerphone - Louder than the nokia's i've had. Not nextel loud, but gets the job done. Clear, but i wish they would've made it so you can have the flip closed while using the speaker. 3.5/5

Reception - I'm gonna put this into two categories here. Dropped calls and RF strength. As for dropped calls, you won't experience any. Spent an hour with the gf, conversations here and there with friends and family for christmas chatter. No static, no dropped calls. overall excellent. 5/5.
As for RF strength, probalby not as strong as my 6230 and 6682, but about equal to my 6620. I usually get full service anywhere regardless but i noticed that in my basement most phones will lose service and the SYNC went in and out while other nokia's i had would hold strong 1 bar. I coud place a call but it wasn't easy. 4/5

Earpiece - unless everyone else is deaf or i have super sensitive ears, this thing is pretty loud. definately louder than any nokia i've had. Maybe i got a good one? doubt it, but anywho, it's sure not quiet as many people have said. I was just in a bar tonight with no problems. Of course i had to close my right ear shut with my finger while i listened with the left, but you're in a bar, not a library. Can be a bit garbled at certain times if you don't hold the earpiece at its "sweet spot" but mostly clear. 4.5/5

mp3 functionality - not the greatest mp3 UI, but it syncs with napster, windows media player, and a slew of other services and players. a2dp is a definate plus and speakers sound clear as a bell. Proprietary connectors are a bummer. I plan on getting a set of a2dp stereo headphones soon. 3.5/5

Overall, im pretty impressed with the phone. for -$50 on amazon.com with an upgrade, i definately didn't go wrong. saved some money for christmas gifts and got a great phone.

I think those who shy away from samsungs past misfortunes and quality issues will not be disappointed by this guy. I had an e317 and was unimpressed. This time around, it's totally the opposite. Great battery life, great size (im a bigger guy and its not a small phone so its spaced nicely with the keypad and eye opening screen), and overall great value even if you buy straight from cingular.

So being a long time nokia user, i think i can manage till the next big nokia comes out. As for now, it's definately a keeper and being a long time nokia user, i had high standards of which most have been met. Hopefully samsung will continue to bring nice handsets like this to cingular.

An ugly thing to think about, but what if Qualcomm actually lost their initial WCDMA patent case against Nokia?

I suspect that the patent issues between Toshiba and Hynix were quite different in nature and scope than the ones between Q and NOK.

I think the more pertinent question, and one a lot closer to realization, is what will happen to NOK if Q wins the GSM infringement case.
