Indonesian officials downplayed the bulletins, which have become something of a tradition themselves since Christmas Eve bombings at churches across the world's most populous Muslim nation in 2000 killed 19 people. The US Embassy in Jakarta and Australian authorities warned that the threat of an attack over the holiday season was "serious" and "credible" and that foreigners could be targeted, but did not say on what the alert was based on. "The Australians and the Americans can say what they want, that is democracy," a police spokesman said. "But up until now we have not seen any frightening signs." Nevertheless, 18,000 officers had been deployed at churches in the capital, Jakarta and tens of thousands more will be on duty elsewhere in the sprawling nation, he said. Bomb squad officers planned to search Jakarta's Dutch-era cathedral for bombs and Christmas Eve worshippers at major churches would be frisked before they entered, he said. AP

lorne..."there is nothing new now..maybe WEAPONS and the ability of ONE single crazed islamic to murder MANY INNOCENT PEOPLE AT ONE TIME" I think you summed up the REASON we need to avoid making blunders like we did in Iraq in that one phrase. This isn't 1400 years ago or even 40 years ago. Today, just ONE person with one vial of a biological weapon could wipe out half our country. ONE person with a small nuclear device could wipe out 500,000. I think 9/11, Madrid and those Middle Class Muslim men in London proved that just fighting them over THERE isn't necessarily going to keep us safe over HERE. Our screwup in Iraq hasn't hurt the Fundamentalists in the Middle East. It's strengthened them. They've gained power in Palestine, Lebanon, Iran, Indonesia and many other countries. Wiser conservatives than you and George Bush know that you don't fight a beehive by hitting it with a sledge hammer.
