I think Austin has a high quality of life, probably higher than the bay area. I just don't think its as easy to get rich in Austin. When I went to Dell in the late 90s I was absolutely floored at the low pay. Dell was paying professionals 35-45K per year all over the place. In the bay area salaries for these same folks were over 100K. Also Dell was stingy with stock options compared to say, Cisco, because there were more bodies, supply and demand. Just not as much money, which of course adds to the quality of life, because artists and others can actually afford to live there. The discussions about how expensive housing has gotten in other areas like Chicago who historically have not had extreme housing prices is what makes me think SV is not all that overpriced right now. These discussions remind me of people that gripe about NYC real estate. Comparing Austin to the bay area won't work, Austin is not a worldwide metropolitan hub.

The executives in the company I worked in would have rather been shot than move to Texas one meets a lot of narrowminded people with this attitude in California. absolutely floored by the summer heat and humidity. They were joggers, but they couldn't hack it in Austin in the summer. this is a legitimate knock on Austin. it is imo unhealthy to exercise outdoors in the daytime in the summer (otoh, there's no California smog, which is also unhealthy for exercise). back when i was a starving student i only jogged early morning or late at night. now i've got a Landice L8.
