If Ford hadn't pardoned Nixon we would have had about 4-5 years of a circus (conviction, appeals, more appeals) and the country needed something better. Ford did the right thing in retrospect. As did Nixon by resigning.
Clinton, OTOH, hung in there and we did have a circus for the last couple of years. Strangely enough Nixon laid the groundwork for Clinton not to resign. The Watergate scandal numbed up the country for another scandal.

RE:"Bush believes HE's part of that special, ruling class. Perhaps if Nixon had done some time, he wouldn't."

Nah. Bush is just hardheaded. He should realize that he can't win with the liberal press on him all the time.

Interestingly, had Reagan picked Ford as a running mate in 1980 we may have been spared George and especially George W..
Quite a turn in history when Reagan picked Bush as VP.

Ford pardoned Nixon. To many of us at the time, it was a statement that the President ISN'T just another citizen, subject to the same laws as the rest of us. That the President is part of the ruling class, with a different set of rules. Ford lost for a good reason.

I never knew that.........and after listening for the past six years from the right about the people Clinton pardoned, all I can say is they have big cojones. To condemn Clinton when Ford pardoned a crook......its ridiculous.
