Millions of sheeps, goats and cows will be butchered and the meat distributed to friends, family and the poor..

Some interesting variations practiced around here (Washington DC metropolitan area).

It's apparently frowned upon to sacrifice animals in the city, so observant Muslims have purchased a site out in the country for this purpose.

Others pay a local halal butcher to do it for them.

And still others just contribute money to people who will do it and distribute the meat back in the "old country."

If you are rich, you can pay for a whole animal; if poor, maybe just a part of a small animal, but you will never handle any bloody meat, just write a check.

So does this difference have to do with religious leaders of the various sects calling the date differently due to calculations of the moons phase? That's what I inferred from what I read in one article. I assumed that the head religious leader of the Shias called the moon sighting differently than the head of the Sunnis- or is that an incorrect inference?
