Wish I knew enough to easily do the math, but it seems to me that as torquey as even a small diesel engine is, it'd be beneficial to have the diesel engine's output go (via computer control) to either a generator or the drive wheels or both. I'd think that a pretty big genny could be driven by something like the Jetta's engine just off-idle. Widening the operating range of a hybrid's electric motor(s).

Or maybe a 2nd diesel engine that's tweaked to do nothing but power a genny as efficiently as possible?

A local mechanic told me to add 1 quart of marvel mystery oil or a quart of atf per 100gal in marine engines to help make up for the lack of lubricity in todays diesel.

New car on the way for me after giving it a lot of thought during the past few months. 2007 VW City Jetta 5-speed. Very excited, as it's my first brand new car ever. Expected delivery is the week of May 16. It's the older body style (MK4 VW Jetta, 1999-2005). It's quite a lot of new car for the money. All optioned up except for luxury package (sunroof, alloy wheels, tinted windows). Heated seats and air conditioning! My last 2 cars have been VW Jettas (1986 and 1992).

I deliberately decided to do without a sunroof because I am quite tall and headroom is a factor in most cars. I'll probably be trolling ebay for some alloy wheels later on. My wife tried to convince me to get one of the newer body style Jettas as they are larger and there was at least one 2006 model (with sunroof) that the dealer was trying to clear out. I was convinced when I found that the City Jetta without a sunroof had more head room than a New Jetta equipped with a sunroof.

I'm very pragmatic about my automotive decisions so some of my reasons for buying the City Jetta are as follows:

- Good value, compact car at subcompact price
- Proven design and technology, they have been building them for 7+ years so the bugs should be worked out by now
- Engine may not be state of the art, but it's simple and reliable (8-valve 2.0L 4-cyl gas engine).
- I prefer the MK4 body style, the new one looks too much like a Camry

Would have preferred a TDI Diesel but most used ones with several years of use are selling for around what the City Jetta costs new.
