My father was a NZer. While there are a lot of good NZers, I think of heroes as spectacularly special. In NZ, people who do trivially good things are pumped up as being heroes, usually to their embarrassment and they explain that anyone would have done what they did, and they are usually right.

I rate my second cousin Ormond Burton as a hero too. And he was decorated as such for his efforts in WWI at Gallipoli and in France. dnzb.govt.nz

I'm sure there are others I'd rate highly if I spent some time on it. Edmund Hillary is considered heroic but to me he climbed a mountain which isn't, to me, all that heroic. He is also a good bloke. Here are some others though they aren't normally in my list. nzedge.com I don't know enough about them or don't think they rate.
