Come on... you and I may not get it, because we've never been in that situation, but what did the guy have to lose? He had no rent money and needed to do something for shelter. He hangs onto the money, he has no shelter. He loses the money, he has no shelter. He puts the money on the line and wins, he's got a place to live.

He was lucky enough to win, and it gives the story a happy ending, or at least gives him some respite from the cold.

I hope neither of us never has to be put in such a situation.

Ted, > Do you know any poor people? I suspect not. ... Early in the evening, this guy sat down next to me at a blackjack table. ...

A guy who was living out of his car, paycheck to paycheck, shows up at a blackjack table?

People should NEVER gamble with money they cannot afford to lose. Any sympathy I might have had for that guy was lost when he showed up at the tables. Even at the $5 minimum tables, $200 can disappear in an instant.

I don't expect you to understand it. His way of thinking is foreign to probably most people on this thread. And it doesn't surprise me that this is your takeaway from the story. Unfortunately that was the least important aspect of the story.

The point of the story is that way too many people in this country live from paycheck to paycheck and are one mistake away from the street. You don't have to worry about that because you could make several mistakes and still not end up on the street. However, I don't have your luxury.....I am maybe two or three mistakes away from the street. And that's not necessarily my fault. Circumstances are such that we all have differing prospects. Some of those circumstances are due to us but many of them are not.

The guy in question was also very trusting. I don't know why......I was never that trusting. Last nite, it worked for him but I suspect it has hurt him in the past. If you believe in God, then I suspect you believe we have lessons to learn in this life. If so, then his lessons are different from mine and yours for whatever reason. What I do know is that he does not deserve to live in the street........I am not sure anyone does......not in this county not in this century.

But hey! $190 can appear almost as quickly!
