I just spoke with the tech.

He claims that they need a "return" for the box (in other words, they DVR needs to be able to talk back and forth with their servers). The way my electrician wired the outlet, he has it running through an amplifier, which apparently prevents two-way communication.

The tech was grumping about the number of outlets we have (we have 5 active outlets). My feeling is, they ought to be able to supply service to as many tvs as I have in the house. If they can't I'm going with DISH.

The DISH service uses one receiver to power two TV's. For a smallish add'l charge, I can get a second receiver to power another two, and both receivers have the DVR capability.

It pisses me off that to get the full Digital service from Charter I have to have a frickin' cable box at the site of each set (which I don't, so I just get the basic channels on the other tv's). The cost of the Charter service is slightly more than the full featured DISH system would run.

I guess so. I had "service availability" 99.999% of the time during the year I was stuck with the telco's DSL, but it never was more than a quarter of the promised speed, if someone called on the phone while I was on the computer, the connection slowed to the old Hayes Smartmodem speed and I had to disconnect everything and then reconnect it afterwards to get it up and running.

At least with the cable company, its either on or its off. I can live with OFF. OFF means I can come back later, instead of hoping against hope that that website will finally finish downloading some time in the next three hours. And ON, well ON means ON - Full Speed Ahead.

These days, I am thrilled that I can move the cable modem an inch to the left and not need to call the Philippines or Bangladesh and have someone named "Skip" instruct me to reconfigure the whole thing for the hundredth time. (I'll never forget the reply when I suggested that they were not delivering the product promised: "We only guarantee that on our end - whatever you get on your end is not our affair." I expected Lily Tomlin to come on the line at any moment.)

What I really want, though, is wireless. That way, I can be rid of all of them. Forever. And Ever! ;-)

Ah, well, glad to hear about Jackson and that tree, anyway. All the best.
