i expect the guard were there without any amo. they are not there as police so only identify those coming over the border. a hell of a position to be in for them if they do not have protection.

this happens or used to happen all the time. if power failure etc.. send out guard to watch out for mall areas etc.. you walk your area without any protection or communication. what are you supposed to do if four armed men come up on you while you play soldier with an empty rifle.

after 911 the guard was posted at airports , and again none had any amo on them. they were only there for appearance purposes i expect. so we put them at danger to themselves and others as they were not in a position to take defensive action against a terrorist.

The assets to secure the border are stuck in Iraq. That's the other big issue within the issue here. Another thing is that to build the fence, we are talking about 90 billion dollars, and we'd need an army of illegal workers to get the job done. Right now the 90 billion just isn't there. Again, it's already been spent in Iraq and on tax breaks for big fat cat pals of Bush-Cheney.
