It is an interesting question as to whether THAI will actually "produce with lower greenhouse gas emissions" than SAGD. It seems to me that that is still one of the many unknowns of this technology. The physics and chemistry of burning (whether above or under ground) will theoretically produce much the same amount of by-products for the same amount of heat produced (e.g. CO2 etc., but the ones underground will be different in detail because of the "cooking/semi-refining" process). The question is, will ALL of the combustion gases remain underground, what will be the effects on ground water, and how does the complete production cycle compare to (say) the OPTI/Nexen one?

I agree with you that if all goes really well one would think that the THAI process would have the edge, but it might not be as large as some of the speculative claims currently being made. It might have drawbacks too, compared to SAGD.

Lots to learn here, I suggest. That's why Whitesands is a pilot. I would be surprised if there will not be a buying opportunity for PBG in the Spring, when a less than perfect (?!) report on the experience to date is released and the stock pulls back.

Tony.
