How supporting Israel is in our national interest totally escapes me..

I think sometimes US policy becomes US policy, and then stays that way just because. We just re-opened relations with Vietnam a few years ago. Was there a reason to not have relations with them after 1980? Not really. We still can't go to Cuba - does that make any sense? And do we really need huge military bases in Germany? Not really. With Israel I think it becomes one of those policies that is our policy because it has been our policy for most of our adult lives, and that's that.
