Well, that is my view, but not that of the Pres I was quoting. His point was that you're American or you're not IIRC. Kind of like Bush's "with us or against us" mindset.

I look at ethnicity as a set of unique interactions which binds a group together, but there are other common interactions which bind different groups into a nation. Why can't multiple ethnic interactions coexist within a matrix of the national interactions? I suppose it is because there is too much overlay between the two, i.e. they can't be separated enough to suit some people. One good example is the English/Spanish language issue in the USA. Language, IMO, is one of the strongest ethnic ties, but it is very threatening for a monolingual culture like the USA to willingly adopt bilingual, or multilingual status. And this is an issue between two groups that don't hate each other to start with!
