We failed them, now they’re on their own.

We failed them? We did not detonate car bombs at the labor recruitment center, blow up the Shia's place of worship or strap dynamite on our youth to detonate where our youth gather. As usual, there is a big ommission where they are supposed to take responsibility for their actions....

I would say "We gave them the opportunity to live in a normal, civil, free society, they chose not to take that opportunity, so we'll leave them on their own".

I liked the proposal by Oregon's Senator Smith......first, that the goal should not be victory in Iraq but the withdrawal of American troops. Having established that goal, then over the next few months we would do a phased withdrawal from Baghdad and other parts of Iraq turning them over to the Iraqis, and retreating to the Syrian and Iranian borders. Upon completion of the initial retreat, we would then in the next months after that, start turning over the borders to the Iraqis as well. It makes perfectly good sense to me.
