You can google bartending and get a zillion hits. I don't do much mixing. I like a good single malt scotch and just sip it over an ice cube. I would never mix good scotch with anything but that ice cube.

I don't think it much matters whether you use vodka or gin (it's more a matter of taste and preference). The key is to use just a very little splash of vermouth.
