Iran was fairly supportive of us after 9-11 and there were pro-American rallies allowed in the streets of Tehran. That was the time for a new detente with Iran, as the country as showing signs of moderating. Since they do have a quasi-democracy (elections for everyone but the mullahs) we could have influenced a much more liberal president and thereby been able to curb their nuclear ambitions.

The big problem was Bush-Cheney were dead-set on invading Iraq by then no matter what and that took precedent over everything. As Pat Buchanon said last night, Bush's decision to invade Iraq, especially without a cohesive plan, was the single worst foreign policy blunder in US history and it is costing us in all kinds of ways, including creating a stronger more hostile Iran which we really have no military options against other than some punitive bombing runs. We are out of troops now. Our Army and Marines are played out. All we have ready is the Air Force and Navy. It's left us terribly exposed to any new threat as well. And now Bush wants to make thje problem even worse, it seems. Just amazing you people can still support Bush after all the times he's outright lied to you.
