When I'm evaluated at work, I'm evaluated in several other areas than just knowledge. Work performance is the major goal, based upon customer satisfaction. If your friend is dull as a rock, he needs to change.

I don't see why he couldn't be encouraged to engage his students.

One of the problems we worked on in physics was firing a gun at a monkey falling out of a tree. If engaging the students with that or possibly the example of why you need to wear seatbelts doesn't get their attention, I would suggest he could use some help.

I'm not for firing bad teachers right off the bat. Their tenure gives them the reassurance they need that if they are dull as a rock and hurting students' ability to learn, they will be ignored. Unacceptable.
